Shunjuu - Japanese Restaurant @ Robertson Quay

One of our favourite restaurants to go for a family dinner is Shunjuu at Robertson Quay. I find it hard to find places that are kid-friendly which serve good food. This Japanese restaurant has been voted the top izakaya restaurant by HungryGoWhere and Ladyironchef. And it is no wonder. The food is, in my kids' words, "simply awesome". While we were dining there, we were interviewed by the crew of TV Tokyo. They were filming an episode on Japanese restaurants outside of Japan which serves authentic Japanese food.
The kids' favourite time: cheese rolled with pork
The bite size morsels are suitable for the children and here, I don't have to remind them to eat faster or finish their food. It probably has to do with the food being on sticks. Very appealing to kids. They have a wide variety of skewered grilled food.
Chicken wings ($6 for 2 sticks)
For the more adventurous, you can try the various types of chicken innards. I really miss the old days of eating chicken gizzard with chicken rice. This version is really good too. I eat it sprinkled with some of their chilli powder.
Chicken gizzard and Chicken skin
Somehow my kids have taken after us and they also love all the strange parts of the chicken. Yup, we ordered a whole plate of chicken soft bones!
Chicken cartilage and Cherry tomato rolled with pork
They have different cuts of beef to choose from and you can let them know how you prefer the 'done-ness' of your beef to be.
Beef short ribs
Besides their signature sumiyaki (charoal-grill), they also have appetisers, salads and deep-fried dishes. This is a very unique dish which I love. They use century egg to top the tofu. A must-try! (but it's also a you-either-love-it-or-hate-it-dish)
Pitan tofu $4
#5 is really picky when it comes to food, so fortunately they do serve staple Japanese dishes such as cha soba and garlic fried rice.
Cha soba (green noodles)
And of course, as with most Japanese restaurants, they serve an assortment of sashimi, which is very fresh. Besides the platter, we also like the Aji (horse mackerel) sashimi.

After the kids had their fill, off they went to play. There is a little slope right beside the row of restaurants and it is a perfect spot for kids to ride their bikes and skate-scooters. What I love best is that they can play within sight while we continue with our meal.
And of course, Kate had lots of fun too. I'm sure she'll grow up to be a dare-devil. She's already trying to imitate everything the older ones are doing.
Monkey see, monkey do
And guess which HK celebrity was spotted dining at Shunjuu?
Good food, great times!
Sane tip: On weekends, this place has a truly family chillax vibe. I love it! Don't forget to make reservations.

Save tip: This place is worth splurging on once in a while for birthday or anniversary celebrations. They also have set lunches which are very reasonably priced at about $20 per set.
